If you are a LoL player watching Arcane, you must have noticed some familiar items being used in the series at some point. But what is the purpose of these League items in the show? Here, we will discuss how the Arcane series uses items from the game to build up its lore. (Spoiler alert: There are some minor spoilers for Arcane Season 2, so please watch the latest episodes first!)
Turbo Chemtank
In the first episode of Arcane Season 2, a Chem Guards squad attacks the council chamber in Piltover with the mission to shoot everyone on sight. These Chem Guards, made with Chemtech, are a direct consequence of Silco’s continued control over his council. I can’t help but wonder if these Chem Guards are inspired by the League of Legends item, Turbo Chemtank.
Turbo Chemtank in League is an item granting 1100 health and a 15% movement speed boost which allows tanks such as Urgot, Volibear, and Cho’Gath to engage in combat. In the game, Turbo Chemtank is available only in the Arena mode and was taken out in patch 14.1. But in Arcane, we get to see what it looks like when Chemtech turns it into a weapon that Piltover’s enemies use.
Chempunk Chainsword
Another recognizable object that viewers have noticed in Arcane is the Chempunk Chainsword. Renni of the Sludgerunners uses a chainsaw that is similar to the Chempunk Chainsword item. Not only does it have the jagged design and the bright green color, but both are run by Chemtech. Renni herself is also cyborg, which gives an additional touch to the similarity of the weapon to the one used in the League.
In League of Legends, Chempunk Chainsword provides 45 attack damage, 15 ability haste, and 450 health, and it is popular among bruiser champions such as Riven, Fiora, and Irelia due to its anti-healing effect. The weapon is a favorite choice in the top lane for champions who want to deal with heavy healing incoming. In Arcane, this reference to League’s Chemtech weaponry connects Renni’s story to Chemtech and her Chemtech-fueled desire for revenge against Jayce.
From Renni’s past, we get to know that she is the leader of the Sludgerunners, an organization that deals in illicit Chemtech manufacturing. After her son dies, she goes on a rampage and even challenges Jayce to a duel. But she dies in the hands of Ambessa while Jayce on the other end escapes death.
Kaenic Rookern
One of the biggest surprises for fans in Arcane Season 2 might be the addition of Kaenic Rookern. This piece of weapon, which has runic carving on it, is seen in the hands of Ambessa’s bodyguard, Rictus. The Kaenic Rookern’s runes are very artistic and represent the magical and enchanted aspect of his weapon. In Arcane, we learn how these runes work, and how they free Rictus from a magical constraint – a great application of League’s item backstory in a plot twist.
In League of Legends, Kaenic Rookern gives 80 magic resistance, 400 health, and 100% base health regeneration, which is perfect for tank champions such as Galio, K’Sante, and Malphite against magical damage. This is an Easter egg in Arcane and shows that Noxians add magical abilities to their weapons and fighters.
Why These Easter Eggs Matter
Riot Games manages to make the connection between the game and the Arcane series even stronger and create new theories about League items. Are these items just a tribute to the game, or can they tell more about the world of Runeterra? In either case, these details enrich the show and provide players with a new motivation to pay attention to the possibility of other hidden things in the Arcane universe.
