Weibo Gaming has made a significant move in their quest to secure a spot at Worlds 2023 by acquiring the services of one of the most decorated coaches in League of Legends esports.
On May 16, Weibo Gaming officially announced the signing of Yang “Daeny” Dae-in as the new head coach for their LPL team. Daeny will take charge of the team for the remainder of the season.
Following a disappointing performance in the 2023 LPL Spring Split, where Weibo Gaming finished only in the top six, the organization decided to part ways with their former head coach Easyhoon. Despite boasting a roster filled with some of the most talented players in the Chinese league, the team fell short of achieving the expected results.
Initially, Weibo Gaming had plans to bring in former T1 head coach Kim “kkOma” Jeong-gyun. However, due to kkOma’s commitments with the Korean national team, the deal could not be finalized. Consequently, Weibo Gaming turned to Daeny as their new coaching addition.
Daeny previously worked with the world-champion roster of DAMWON KIA in 2020 before joining T1 for the 2021 season. However, the results with T1 fell below expectations, leading to his dismissal in the middle of the 2021 LCK Summer Split. Subsequently, he returned to DAMWON KIA, where he remained until the end of 2022.
Given the potential of Weibo Gaming’s lineup and the organization’s high expectations, Daeny will need to prove his worth in leading a team of strong personalities.
The start date for the 2023 LPL Summer Split is yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to commence after the conclusion of the Mid-Season Invitational.
