WBG Xiaohu – Worlds 2024 Semifinal Interview
Q: Weibo Gaming demonstrated good strategies for their teams, but they had issues with team fights and decision making. Can you differentiate between the areas that the team failed to execute and the areas where the team could have done better in terms of play making?
Xiaohu: The biggest issue we had was in mid-game macro positioning, and more specifically, how to control vision and decide where to engage. In the first game, we were probably better off fighting around mid lane, and in the second game, during the Baron fight, the enemy carries didn’t have Flash, but we mistakenly focused on Jax instead of targeting them directly.
Q: In Game 2, WBG decided to ban Maokai for the top lane and Elise for the jungle, and it was also Elise’s in-game birthday. How did those picks fit into the strategy?
Xiaohu: The Maokai pick was based on the scrim; we believed that Maokai and Poppy would perform well against Jax, but he played well. We were not very good at teamfights as a team. When it came to Elise, our strategy was to go for an early aggression, but after a disastrous Level 1 fight, we switched to scaling strategy.
Q: What was your emotional state after the loss and what are the future plans of WBG?
Xiaohu: Of course, it was disappointing. All of us had the impression that we were not at our optimum in many aspects. But at the end of the day, it is a loss and we just have to take it. At the moment, the most important thing is to take a break and recover.
Q: It is very difficult not to get through. How would you describe WBG’s Worlds performance and the year in general?
Xiaohu: If we look at the year as a whole, I think it has been a success. We only had our full roster since summer and we were bad and almost went to the lower bracket but we made it to the LPL finals and got 4th at the world championship. We have surely developed as a team and given that we entered the competition as the fourth seed, this is a good performance. It is rather sad, however, because we were on the verge of taking things even further.
Q: We have witnessed Skarner and Jax causing massive upsets at the Worlds. What was WBG’s approach in dealing with them, and why were they left exposed for three games?
Xiaohu: Some of those choices were shaped by our scrim experience. Jax and Skarner are good into Yone but we also wanted to have some CC champions to improve our team fighting and some junglers such as Brand and Elise to deal with Skarner. We were able to establish some early leads but our mid-late game decision making was not on par with what was required and this led to our downfall in the series.
