WBG vs G2 – Is G2 ready to lock in a top 8 position?
G2 Esports is at a 1-1 record after two intense days of competition in the Worlds 2024 Swiss stage. Although they were defeated by Hanwha Life Esports (HLE), the LEC’s top seed has displayed potential. However, G2 was able to take the LCK squad to a 45-minute game, and even had some advantages.
Finally, the draft from HLE, especially their fully scaled Smolder, became the key, and now G2 has a very difficult task of getting to the Knockout Stage. The next test for them is Weibo Gaming (WBG) from LPL. Now let’s look at what we can expect from this much anticipated match.
Match Breakdown
Another aspect of G2’s strategy that sets them apart from other teams at the top level is their perspective on team compositions. Their jungler, Yike, has been allowed to choose more damage-oriented champions, instead of being forced into the utility or engage pick roles like Maokai, Sejuani or Vi. This strategic change enables Yike to deal a lot of damage to the enemy team while also putting more pressure on the other members of the team to fill the gap.
To this end, the team has had to make changes to their playstyle; top laner BrokenBlade has gone from a carry to a utility role. The rest of the team, however, stays closer to the meta and we see Caps and Mikyx playing Yone and Rell in several games.
On the other hand, WBG plays like the top LCK teams, as mentioned above. Their jungler Tarzan likes to use utility champions and that means that the mid and bot lanes can carry. Breathe is a strong laner, who can play both split-pushers and team fighters depending on the team’s requirements. Crisp, who is famous for his enchanter support, has already shown that he can play Renata against Team Liquid.
Who Holds the Edge?
In their hey days, both G2 and WBG appear to be on the same level in terms of prospects. The deciding factor of this match is expected to be the draft phase and how effectively the teams can capitalize on their players’ abilities. G2 will have to be more active, especially if Yike will keep playing carry champions. On the other hand, WBG may choose to sit back and farm if they go for their comfort champions, and look for an opportunity to engage if needed.
Given that G2 has shown the ability to stand up to HLE, they should be able to take the victory here. If they can improve their strategy and write correctly, G2 could easily be in the 2-1 bracket and be closer to the Knockout Stage.
This match will not only challenge G2 but will also set the tone of how well the European teams can compete against the East in this year’s Worlds. The path to the top 8 is still possible, but G2 must demonstrate that they are capable of doing so.
